Kids and Chiropractic Care
Q. Is chiropractic treatment good for children?
A. Yes, it is. As kids develop they suffer falls and tumbles while learning to crawl, walk, climb and run. Older children experience many types of falls and blows from activities of daily living as well as from participating in sports. These injuries may cause many symptoms including back and neck pain, stiffness, soreness or discomfort. Dr. Gerber adapts her chiropractic care to each of her individual patients.
The adjustment of children is modified to their level of spinal development and is very gentle. As the saying goes, “as the twig is bent, so grows the tree”. Having your child checked for posture changes, muscle imbalances, and spinal issues can ensure that early insults to the spine never become an issue in their health and development. Kids generally respond quickly, if they need adjustments, and may require less frequent check-ups to keep them healthy.
Q. Why do newborns and infants get adjustments?
A. Is your newborn colicky? Having problems feeding, latching or sleeping? Were they born with torticollis or wry neck? Babies are naturally healthy, happy and active. When they’re not, the reason could be a problem with their spine. Childbirth itself can affect an infant’s spine. A newborn may exhibit signs of spinal distress with colic, unusual crying, problems feeding or sleeping. Pediatric examinations and adjustments are very gentle. The “press and hold” technique is used, knowing exactly where to adjust, the doctor applies no more pressure than you would use to test the ripeness of a tomato. Young children can also be examined by a chiropractor to promote early detection of postural imbalances and good spinal hygiene. As the saying goes, “as the twig is bent, so grows the tree”. If we are able to straighten the “twig” or the child’s spine, the “tree” grows to it’s full potential in health.
Q. When should you first take your child to a chiropractor?
A. As soon as possible after birth. Chiropractic examination and care at an early stage can diagnose and may prevent common childhood disorders from developing. Any age is a good time to start – a visit to the chiropractor will help your child’s body keep itself healthy and get your infant or child started on a life long path of good health.
Q. What common conditions of infants and children might respond to chiropractic care
A. Infants have been treated for irritability, colic, constipation and recurring ear infections with good success. Parents take their children to the chiropractor for help with bedwetting, clumsiness, colic, constipation, recurring ear infections, sleep disturbances, growing pains, headaches, painful joints, poor concentration, postural problems, scoliosis, sinus problems, and routine spinal check-ups. Children generally love to be adjusted and jump up on the chiropractic table when they arrive for their appointment!
